Last season The Beach Company launched India-designer Esha Lal debut swimwear range online. Having met with tremendous success, considering the global pandemic, we wanted to speak to her about her design ethos and share it here.
Here's what she has to say!
I am from the valley of Dehradun, and have been living in Mumbai for 12 years. I launched my swimwear label Esha Lal Swimwear in May 2019. Having been brought up around forests, gardens, mountains and tea estates, I get all my inspiration from nature. Being a botanical watercolour artist all the prints are original illustrations of my artwork. They all represent nature, with their vibrant and floral prints. My love for plants drives me to create prints that are bold, colourful and life like.
Esha Lal Swimwear is an environmentally conscious swimwear and resort wear company, aiming to make consciously made products more available to the consumer
at affordable prices.
Our resort wear is made with 100% organic GOTS certified cotton. The resort wear is simply designed for comfort. Simple silhouettes which are easy to wear and take off even when one doesn’t have a changing room available. Every style is inspired to flow effortlessly in the wind with their light, airy and quick drying features. Our swimwear is designed to fit the needs of Indian women. We focus on fit and comfort of Indian bodies that brings out their confidence.
I am doing my own bit and gradually moving into becoming a complete environmentally conscious swimwear company. I have recently included seed paper tags to the swimwear that grow into basil plants once potted and watered.
Due to the pandemic and the lockdown situation, our production had to be put on hold. But being at home I am coming up with new styles and ideas to launch and new ways to make my brand more conscious in the coming year.
Luckily ethical swimwear is now becoming the main message and the main selling point of the decade. As there is no more room for waste in the world, I did not want to be another designer not considering how much harm my business can do to our environment. Thus I am doing my own bit and gradually moving into becoming a complete environmentally conscious swimwear company. We mostly work with florals so as to give the feeling of being one with nature. As an artist I always wanted my swimwear to be like a blank canvas on which I could showcase my watercolour techniques and the vibrant possibilities of nature.
